SDI and PFL

California State Disability Insurance & Paid Family Leave

State Disability Insurance

  • Employers: employers with 1 or more employees
  • Duration: up to 52 weeks per disability
  • Reasons: unable to work due to a non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy.
  • Eligibility: have earned at least $300 from which SDI deductions were withheld during the base period.
  • Benefits: not required continuation of benefits, but may be required under FMLA and CFRA, which may run concurrently.
  • Job Protection: no job protection, but may be required under FMLA and CFRA, which may run concurrently.
  • Compensation:   60% - 70% (depending on income) of wages earned up to a maximum of $1,357 weekly.
  • ESOP Shares: not using sick or PTO while out on leave may reduce ESOP shares.
  • Sick and PTO: not required to use while on leave.


Paid Family Leave

  • Employers: employers with 1 or more employees
  • Duration: up to 8 weeks 
  • Reasons:  to bond with a new child; care for a seriously ill family member (child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or registered domestic partners)
  • Eligibility: have earned at least $300 from which SDI deductions were withheld during the base period.
  • Benefits: no required continuation of benefits, but may be required under FMLA and CFRA, which may run concurrently.
  • Job Protection: no job protection, but may be required under FMLA and CFRA, which may run concurrently.
  • Compensation:   60% - 70% (depending on income) of wages earned up to a maximum of $1,357 per week.
  • ESOP Shares: not using sick or PTO while out on leave may reduce ESOP shares.
